چکیده

Hominy feed (HF) has been evaluated in feedlot and dairy rations but not as a supplemental energy source for lactating beef cows. The objective of this study was to determine the effect level HF supplementation on intake, digestibility, ruminal fermentation characteristics, situ dry matter (DM) disappearance bermudagrass hay. Five ruminally cannulated cows (body weight (BW) = 596 kg, SE 13.9) were used an experiment with 5 × Latin square design. Treatments hay-basal diet low (LH; 0.25% BW), medium (MH; 0.50% ground corn (LC; (MC; BW) no supplement (CON). Cows housed individually, supplements offered at 0800 daily. Hay maintain 10% refusal. Periods 16–d, 10 d adaptation. Ruminal fluid sampled 14 each period measurement pH, volatile fatty acids, rumen ammonia-N. An degradation hay completed diet. dry-matter intake (DMI % affected (p 0.14) by supplement, total DMI greater ≤ 0.05) MH MC compared LH CON. Digestible BW LC, intermediate, CON lesser 0.01) than all other diets. Dry-matter fill, passage rate, retention time did differ ≥ 0.31). Bermudagrass hay’s potentially degradable fraction CON, effective DM degradability different 0.39) among Overall, diets reduced or CON; therefore, negative associative from any levels study.

Feeding behavior, ruminal fermentation, and performance of pregnant beef cows differing in phenotypic residual feed intake offered grass silage.

This study examined the relationship of residual feed intake (RFI) and performance with feeding behavior and ruminal fermentation variables in pregnant beef cows offered a grass silage diet. Individual grass silage DMI (dry matter digestibility = 666 g/kg) was recorded on 47 gestating (mean gestation d 166, SD = 26 d) Simmental and Simmental × Holstein-Friesian beef cows for a period of 80 d. C...

Effects of energy or protein supplements and stage of production on intake and digestibility of hay by beef cows.

In two consecutive years, primi- and multiparous, spring-calving Hereford and Hereford x Angus cows (n = 32, yr 1; n = 42, yr 2) were used to determine the effects of supplements and lactational status on forage intake, digestibility, and energy intake. Cows were randomly alloted to treatments after being blocked by age, breed, and weight. Supplements fed during gestation provided .55 kg/d of C...

The effects of corn silage particles size and fat supplement on feed intake, digestibility, ruminal function, chewing activity, and performance in mid-lactating Holstein dairy cows

An experiment was carried out to determine the effect of corn silage particle size and fat supplements on performance, solid passage rate through the digestive tract, and chewing behavior in dairy cows. The forages were coarse or fine corn silage with geometric means of 8.8±2.7 and 5.6±2.8 mm, and alfalfa with geometrics means of 7.0±3.3 mm, and fat supplements were neutral fat (palm) and soy-o...

Stockpiled forage or limit-fed corn as alternatives to hay for gestating and lactating beef cows.

In Exp. 1, 31, 24, and 17 mature, pregnant Simmental x Angus cows (initial BW = 662.0 +/- 10.4 kg) in each of 3 yr were used to determine the efficacy of stockpiled orchardgrass, limit-fed corn, or ad libitum hay for maintaining cows in mid- to late gestation, respectively. In Exp. 2, 24 mature, pregnant crossbred cows (initial BW = 677.7 +/- 9.4 kg) per treatment in each of 3 yr were used to d...

Effect of Applying Ammonia or Fibrolytic Enzymes to Bermudagrass Hay on Feed Intake, Digestibility, and Growth of Beef Steers

This study evaluated the effects of the method of applying a commercial fibrolytic enzyme, Biocellulase A20 (A20), or ammonia to bermudagrass hay on the feed intake, digestibility, and growth performance of 50 AngusBrangus steers. Five-week fall regrowth of bermudagrass was harvested and treated with either anhydrous ammonia or A20 at rates of 3% dry matter (DM) and 15 g/ton of hay, respectivel...
